Karen Steffens – Charlotte

Dear Friend of Rotary District 7680:

WheKaren and Todd 2n my mother-in-law Edith was 10 years old she contracted Polio.  Edith’s courage and independent has been an inspiration to me over the past 30 years.

With my family’s involvement in Rotary and with Edith as our motivation, Todd and I have decided to climb Mt Kilimanjaro this summer with Rotary as part of its effort to eradication Polio worldwide.

Rotary has been fighting Polio since 1985.  Between 1985 and 2000 Rotary immunized more than 500 million children.  In 1988 there were 125 Polio-Endemic countries.  In 1994 the Americas were certified Polio-Free.  In 2002 Europe was certified Polio-Free and today there are only 2 Polio-Endemic countries remaining.

This push to finally eradicate Polio is most difficult and costly but to fail now would invite a Polio resurgence.  Each climber commits to raising a minimum of $3,000 each and we would love for you to join us in the effort to end Polio worldwide.

We are funding our own way to climb Kilimanjaro so every dollar you donate will go directly to Rotary International’s Push to End Polio.  You gift is tax deductible.

  7. Karen (and Todd),

Having climbed Kilimanjaro in 2012 with Macon (not Rotary, however) I can say that it is definitely a bucket list item that will leave you with a lifetime of memories and conversations. Will look forward to hearing of your experience when you return. I hope you will have the time to enjoy a safari as well. If you happen to have Joseph (jose meela) as a guide you must get him to share some of his nearly 800 trips up the mountain.

    polepole,
